A Self-Care Practice for the Full Moon
Have you ever looked up at the sky and felt such a strong connection with the Full Moon that you can’t quite explain?
You are not alone. The moon in her full state is associated throughout history and in many different cultures with magic and mystery. A Full Moon is a beautiful sight, and when in its Supermoon stage, even more magnificent.
But why is it that wolves howl at the Moon? Why is it that we tend to go a little “nuts” during the Full Moon?
Just as the Full Moon pulls the tides and waves of the earth, it is believed she also pulls the tides of water in our bodies due to the fact that we are made of roughly 60% water.
The word “lunatic” is associated with the moon, derived from Luna, the Roman Goddess of the Moon. Coupled with its effect on the tides, this may explain why a Full Moon causes us to be a little “luna-ish” in behavior.
Self-Care During a Full Moon
With all this watery energy bubbling around, it’s important to engage in some self-care during a Full Moon.
Taking extra care of ourselves is essential. Our emotions are heightened, and we are more erratic than usual.
It is a good idea to keep a moon diary. When the Full Moon comes around every month, you can look back on how you felt, thought, behaved, and what happened. Full Moons are often times of revelations for many of us.
So what can we do to take care of ourselves during the Full Moon?
Full Moon Rituals
Full Moon rituals have been going on for many hundreds of years.
Now we are not suggesting going to the extremes, such as rolling naked under the Full Moon on a beach at night (which, according to legend, will enable you to turn into a werewolf). Still, there are other milder but equally fun ways you can enjoy the lunar energies during this time!
A self-care practice during the Full Moon works wonders, but to give you a bit of variety, we’ve listed several below so you can pick and choose which one suits you!
1. A Crystal Ritual To Connect With Your Higher Self
Crystals and the moon go hand in hand. Both represent magic. Both enable you to tap into your inner Yin energy. Both enable the development of psychic gifts and deeper intuition.
A crystal ritual can help you connect with your Higher Self, which then enables you to receive messages from your soul that aligns you with your true purpose. If it is connecting to your Higher Self that interests you, then this one is for you.
Choose a set of crystals. Moonstone and selenite work particularly well under the Full Moon. Their Yin energy is powerful and can help you connect with your own.
Place them in front of you, on a table or the ground. Ensure you are in a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. It can be helpful to play meditation music to get you in the mood. Meditating is important to do before the ritual to ensure your mind is free to receive the messages.
Close your eyes and say to yourself, “I wish to connect to my Higher Self.”
Listen to any words that come in or any thoughts that pop into your mind seemingly out of nowhere or any emotions that you feel. This is your intuition talking and sending you messages from your Higher Self.
Afterward, write down what you heard, saw, or felt. This type of ritual is wonderful because you feel a sense of relaxation afterward (unless you received a message that gives you the opposite feeling). But don’t worry, your Higher Self never wants to alarm you and will relay messages to you in a way that works in your best interest!

2. A Bathing Ritual to Align Your Internal Energies
This Full Moon ritual helps to align your internal energies and is especially helpful if you’ve been going through a stressful time.
It involves submerging yourself in a body of water (a bath or shower), or you can just fill a bowl with warm water and dip hands/feet in (depending on which feels best to you!) A self-care ritual during a Full Moon just wouldn’t be the same without water!
Once you have submerged yourself, your hands, or your feet into the water, breathe in deeply and exhale again after holding your breath for 5 seconds.
This breathing exercise, combined with the water, releases tension from within and enables your inner energies to align with one another once more. Combined with the lunar energies, you’ll be good as new in no time!

3. A Releasing Ritual to Start Anew
The Full Moon is a time of powerful release and magic. It is a time when we can connect with our Higher Selves and release what is no longer serving us. A releasing ritual involves a simple pen and paper - or even just your own thoughts!
Sit in a quiet space and let your mind rest. Think about what needs releasing in your life.
- Is it a thought pattern?
- A relationship?
- A way of doing things that no longer help you?
Whatever it is that needs released, write it down and then say, “I release this from my life.”
Otherwise, simply say out loud what it is that needs releasing, such as, “I release myself from the destructive thought patterns that consume me.”
You may not feel anything at first - but the Moon has heard you. Lunar energies will help release you from whatever binds you. This is the greatest magic of the Full Moon.
Take Advantage of the Full Moon
A self-care Full Moon ritual is a wonderful thing during a time when Moon Magic is at its peak.
Full Moon practice is something you can try once every now and then or simply make a habit of every month. The result is that you will feel freer and more in tune with yourself as you continue your personal process of revolution.
Next time you look up at the Full Moon, remember that its light isn’t there just to shine down on the earth. It is also there to guide us. These rituals give it the ability to guide us with greater ease.
