How to Activate Your Upper Chakras to Increase Creativity

Creativity is a state of mind that can be accessed when you activate your upper chakras. If you’ve experienced long periods of time spent uninspired and unproductive, first of all, you’re not alone. Second of all, we have some good news for you: the upper chakras are your access points to your highest streams of consciousness - your creativity.

Creativity can improve all areas of your life. Your ability to be creative can increase the amount of money you make, how much you enjoy your daily life, and how open you are to new ideas. Tapping into your own creativity is at your fingertips with this meditation we’re going to tell you about today.

How to Unlock Blocked Creativity Using Your Chakras

Before we begin, if you’re unfamiliar with the 7 chakras, head over to our Beginner’s Guide to Understanding Chakras for your introduction to your body’s energy system. For today, all you need to understand is that your body’s chakra system is responsible for maintaining your physical, mental, and spiritual health, and your upper chakras.

Your upper chakras, including the Throat chakra, Third Eye chakra, and Crown chakra are the chakras associated with ideas, imagination, spirituality, and of course, creativity. By cleansing your upper chakras on a regular basis, you’ll begin to rediscover your natural sense of curiosity and inspiration.

You can tap into dormant creativity when you raise your energetic frequency. One of the best ways to raise your energetic frequency is by using breathwork and meditation to clear buildups of negative energy in the chakras. Many ancient cultures and religions regularly practice breathwork, as breath is understood by many as lifeforce or prana. Breath brings high-vibe energy into the body and allows for the release of negative, harmful energy.

This 5-step breathwork practice is called the Pranayam Energizer Series. It takes about 25-30 minutes to complete. It will fill you with energy and help you recover your lost creativity by unblocking and cleansing all 7 of your chakras.

Note: If you’re pregnant or are in the first three days of your menstrual cycle, avoid the naval pumping during the breath of fire technique.

5-Part Breathwork & Meditation Practice for Creativity

  1. Begin by sitting in a cross-legged position with your spine straight. Bring your thumb and pointer finger together to create Gyan Mudra. Keep your arms straight and rest your wrists on your knees. Bring your chin back so your neck is in line with your spine. Begin breath of fire by pushing air out of your nose as you snap the belly in. The inhale should happen naturally through the nose. Then inhale deeply and pull the root lock by pulling the navel and sex organs up and in (like you’re stopping the flow of urination). Hold your breath for 10-30 seconds, then let your air out and relax. Repeat for 7 minutes.
  2. For 5 minutes, do long, deep breathing through your nose only. Breathe in so your lungs expand more than usual, then breathe out completely and pull your navel in as the air leaves your lungs. After 5 minutes, take a deep inhale and hold your breath for 10-15 seconds before letting your breath out. Then relax.
  3. Immediately pucker your lips and breathe deeply in through your pursed lips and out of your nose for 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, hold your breath for 10-15 seconds before breathing out. Relax.
  4. Repeat part 1 (7 minutes of breath of fire) and then breathe powerfully and regularly for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, breathe in and hold your breath while focusing on the space between your eyebrows (where the Third Eye chakra is) for 10-15 seconds. Exhale and relax.
  5. Meditate on the flow of your breath as you allow yourself to breathe normally again. Feel how energized each cell in your body is just by regulating the breath!

The pulling in of the navel when you exhale helps move energy from your lower chakras to the upper chakras.

Concluding Thoughts…

This practice is very powerful because it involves a system of locks (done by contracting muscles), breathing mechanisms, movements and mantras that all have observable effects on the human mind. As you learn breathing techniques, you may have trouble at first getting into a rhythm, or you may feel out of breath or get a cramp in your side. Your endurance will build up quickly as you build the intercostal muscles between your ribs, so be patient and keep at it.

Most importantly, don’t beat yourself up if you’re having an off week creatively. Rest if you need to! When in doubt, stop and breathe and return to your centre.
