DIY Body Scrub: Your Perfect Exfoliator

DIY Body Scrub: Your Perfect Exfoliator

Human beings are pretty tough on their skin.

Cold weather, dry heat, shaving, and even drinking alcohol can rob our skin of its natural moisture and leave us feeling… well, rough around the edges.

A great way to give your skin a quick pick-me-up? Whipping up a batch of this homemade sugar scrub. This simple DIY scrub will exfoliate and moisturize and leave your skin feeling soft and renewed.

The best part is that it’s super inexpensive and can be made with three ingredients that you likely already have in your home:

  • Brown sugar
  • Cocoa powder
  • Coconut oil

Brown sugar is a natural exfoliant that promotes new skin growth while gently removing dead cells from your skin’s surface. It’s not drying and has been shown to have antimicrobial properties.

Cocoa powder is an antioxidant that promotes blood circulation. And coconut oil can reduce inflammation while providing excellent moisture for your skin.

A Few Important Tips

Make sure you mix the ingredients well so that you don’t have any clumps of brown sugar. If you find that your sugar is too hard to work with, put it into a microwavable safe bowl, cover it with a wet paper towel, and microwave it for about 10 seconds.

This should soften it up to the point where you will incorporate it into your mixture.

While this DIY body scrub is great for most people with sensitive skin because there are no fragrances, you should always test any new products on a small patch of skin before using them on the entire body.

If you find that the brown sugar is too coarse for your skin, try to find a finer grain sugar, or use white sugar instead.

How to Make Your Own DIY Body Scrub

Preparation: 15 minutes

  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder

Step 1

Add sugar medium bowl container and add coconut oil and cocoa. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.

Step 2

Take your new scrub into the shower, and scoop out as much or as a little as you would like. Use more pressure on tougher skin, and be gentle with the thinner skin on your chest and face.

Step 3

As you work with the scrub under the water, the sugar will gently resurface your skin.

You’ll be able to feel the difference as your skin is transformed from oily and uneven to moisturized and smooth. Using your scrub right before shaving will work to combat potential ingrown hairs.

This recipe also makes a wonderful foot scrub to help combat dry, scratchy feet!
