The second chakra, and the one discussed in this guide, is the Sacral Chakra, which is associated with emotions, creativity and passion. This chakra is the representative of pleasure, and concerns itself with relationships, sexuality and sensuality.

Location of the Sacral Chakra

The Sacral chakra is located in the area of your body just below your belly button, inhabiting your lower belly and back. It is located very near to the groin, which correlates with its residence over passion and sexuality.

Sacral Chakra Characteristics

This chakra is associated with our need to connect with others and create relationships. It represents creation, of both art and the world around us. The four areas which are most closely linked to the Sacral chakra are creativity, relationships, emotions and sexuality.

The Sacral chakra resonates with our emotional state-of-being, and when this chakra is misaligned, it can cause emotional turmoil – mood swings, jealousy, anger and frustration. It is especially connected to our sexual emotions and how we relate to sensual relationships.

Pleasure is an extremely important aspect of the Sacral chakra. The primary motivating force of this chakra is seeking pleasure in all forms and asking us to embrace the sensations of the world around us. When this chakra is well-balanced, you will not only follow your bliss without guilt, but you’ll also be able to feel the pleasure that exists in your life with more intensity.

The Sacral chakra rules over our ability to be fluid and essentially go with the flow of our lives, and part of this attribute has to do with this chakra’s association with the element of water. The water element helps regulate our emotions and assist us in being open-minded to new or challenging situations.

If you’ve been feeling like you just can’t handle the transitions in your life lately, chances are your second chakra is out-of-whack. A well-balanced Sacral chakra helps you approach the necessary changes in life with a calm demeanour and a bit of curiosity. After all, most of the best surprises in life are just that – surprises.

Signs of a Misaligned Sacral Chakra

When this chakra is not balanced it can affect certain areas of our life in a negative way.

An imbalanced Sacral chakra can cause feelings of emotional instability, jealousy, codependency, feelings of numbness or apathy or even overindulgence and addiction. Because this chakra seeks pleasure, it can cause you to turn to substances when it needs tending to. If you aren’t connected to your emotions, you might be more tempted to take drugs or drink alcohol to try to feel something.

If you’ve felt overly moody or like you just can’t get control over your emotions, this might be the result of an imbalanced Sacral chakra. You might feel overwhelmed and like your emotions are controlling you and causing you to act out. Irritability, argumentative traits and a propensity for confrontation all indicate that your second chakra needs to be aligned.

On the flip side, an imbalanced Sacral chakra can also cause feelings of apathy and a numbing quality that can be very distressing. If you feel disconnected from your emotions, like you can’t feel them at all, you might want to try balancing this chakra.

How to Balance the Sacral Chakra

This chakra is associated with the color orange. Sometimes, balancing this chakra can be as simple as deep thought embracing this color or surrounding yourself with a peachy glow and meditating on it.

Because the Sacral chakra is also associated with water, you might try surrounding yourself with water or combining orange with calming blue for an amplified effect. Wearing a pair of glasses with orange lenses would be an effective yet simple way to promote harmony within this chakra.

The Sacral chakra is represented by the symbol of the crescent moon and focusing on this powerful symbol is yet another way to balance this chakra.

Certain yogic poses, such as Cow-Face and One-Legged King Pigeon are wonderfully effective when it comes to balancing the Sacral chakra.

Metaphysical tools, like this chakra pendulum, are a great way to increase intuition while balancing all of the chakras.

No matter how you choose to align this chakra, you’ll be happy that you did. When you feel your Sacral chakra harmonize, you’ll feel emotionally stable, sensual and secure in your relationships.
