The Essential Guide to the Third Eye Chakra

The Essential Guide to the Third Eye Chakra

Each of the seven major chakras functions in our bodies as a point of spinning energy, a wheel of spirit within us.

When our chakras are out-of-whack or misaligned, it can feel like our entire lives are topsy-turvy; and when our Third Eye Chakra isn’t balanced, our entire spiritual center may feel devoid of substance. The Third Eye chakra is also known as Ajna, which means “perceiving,” and it acts as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms.

Learning more about this chakra and how to balance it can lead to spiritual discoveries the likes of which you have yet to encounter.

What is the Third Eye Chakra?

Before we learn how to balance this chakra, let’s explore the basics of the Third Eye, like location, color, and element.

The Third Eye chakra represents the space where we reconcile our inherent duality: the separation and union of both our physical and spiritual realities. The Third Eye acts as the observer, the part of yourself that perceives the worlds inside and around you. It represents your consciousness and acts as a pathway to your own personal enlightenment.

  • Location: In the center of the forehead, between the eyebrows
  • Color: Indigo
  • Element: Supreme Element (All elements combined)

Most every person possesses some semblance of spiritual yearning or curiosity, and your Third Eye chakra helps guide you in the right direction. It represents your natural reserve of wisdom and understanding of the outside world. This chakra is associated with extra-sensory perception, and when blocked, your intuition or psychic abilities may feel drained or reduced.

When this chakra is balanced, we feel a sense of spiritual confidence, intuition, emotional stability, self-awareness, and increased observation. A healthy Third Eye chakra typically indicates a strong sense of self and an increase in psychic abilities.

Is My Third Eye Chakra Blocked?

Have you felt lost lately, like you’re not sure where to turn or how to find your center again? Have you lost the connection to your spirituality or your faith in the Universe? Your Third Eye chakra may be responsible.

When the Third Eye chakra is unbalanced or misaligned, you may experience certain emotional, mental, or spiritual challenges. You may feel an overall sense of lacking direction or purpose like you can’t quite figure out what you’re supposed to be doing. You might feel a disconnect between your spirit and your life like you’re mentally wandering further from your life here on this planet, or that your faith is waning.

An unbalanced Third Eye chakra can make you feel insignificant, like what you’re doing doesn’t matter. You might feel unable to move forward or choose a clear direction. It may become nearly impossible to make decisions without overthinking them—you may end up avoiding decision-making altogether.

If you’re typically an intuitive person who seems to be off of their game lately, your Third Eye chakra is probably lopsided. An unable Third Eye chakra inhibits our psychic abilities and reduces our intuition.

Physically, a misaligned Third Eye chakra can cause restless sleep, clumsy behavior, and difficulty soaking in new information.

As you can see, it’s important to keep this chakra balanced and healthy in order to maintain our spiritual, psychological, and psychic awareness.

How to Balance the Third Eye Chakra

Luckily for us, opening and balancing the Third Eye chakra can be easy and flawlessly incorporated into your everyday life. One of the easiest ways to balance a chakra is to work with that chakra’s associated color: In this case, it’s indigo.

Search through your wardrobe and separate any items of clothing that are indigo or contain its gorgeous hues. Paint a picture using indigo as your primary color palette. Meditate and visualize indigo surrounding your aura, enveloping you in a blue-violet egg of protection. You can even search for indigo-themed meditation videos on the internet.

Third Eye Healing Snacks

Head to your local grocery store or farmer’s market for some Third Eye-friendly foods. Purple foods like blackberries, grapes, dark blueberries, purple kale and cabbage, red onions, eggplants, and purple potatoes are all connected to Third Eye energy.

Foods rich in Omega-3 are also great for balancing this chakra: walnuts, flax seeds, salmon, sardines, and chia seeds can be easily incorporated into your diet. Dark chocolate has also been said to increase blood flow and provide mental clarity, both of which help open the Third Eye chakra.

Working with Crystals

Crystal healing is a fabulous activity for many mental, physical, and emotional ailments, and the balancing of chakras is but one of their myriad talents.

Labradorite is the Stone of Magic, and its connection to the ethereal realm makes it one of the best crystals to use when balancing the Third Eye chakra. This shimmering, iridescent crystal penetrates its healing, mystical energy deep within your body and spirit, and allows for peaceful transformation and enlightenment.

Lapis lazuli is another deeply spiritual stone that can open up and balance the energy of the Third Eye. This stone increases self-awareness and objectivity—two ingredients of any balanced Third Eye chakra. Its deep indigo hue is also associated with this chakra. Try holding a piece of lapis lazuli directly over the center of your forehead, where your Third Eye chakra resides, and meditate for a moment on the healing energy surrounding and flowing deep within this chakra.

Sodalite is another deeply indigo crystal with a connection to this chakra. Sodalite enhances objectivity, increases clarity, and brings peace of mind to those who work with it. This is the best crystal to use if you are also experiencing anxiety, as it encourages a calm demeanor. This stone also increases self-acceptance and trust in your intuition.

Positive Affirmations

Another great way to balance your chakras is through the use of positive affirmations. Purposefully directing your mind towards positive thoughts relating to the Third Eye chakra can help it blossom. You can create your own unique affirmations, focusing on the traits of this chakra that you’d most like to enhance. Remember keywords such as intuition, wisdom, spirituality, openness, objectivity, and connection.

Examples include:

  • I trust my intuition
  • I seek my innermost wisdom
  • I love and accept who I am
  • I am a spiritual being
  • I am expansive

The important thing to remember about positive affirmations for chakra balancing is to focus on the positive qualities of the chakra that you want to embody and encourage within yourself.

As you can see, you can easily incorporate one or more of these practices into your daily routine without feeling overwhelmed or spread thin. Try one or two small practices each day, even if you can only spare 5 minutes. It will soon become easier to focus on taking care of yourself and your chakras.

Once your Third Eye chakra begins to open and flourish, you’ll feel more intuitive and spiritually connected than ever before.
