Simple Mantras for Getting Through Grief
The ancient yogis studied the energy in the body and found our emotional wounds require healing just like physical wounds. It’s not the skin itself that is frayed by grief, but the nerves, the mind, and the heart. Yogis have studied this for thousands of years and their knowledge has allowed us to reap the benefits of this information that has been passed down from teacher to student so we can better navigate our emotional space.
One day I was teaching a meditation and breathwork class that was usually full, and just two people showed up. They had witnessed a family member cross over and were grief-stricken. I dug into my yogic arsenal to offer them two ways to heal the negative energy they could feel building up in their hearts and throats.
These techniques are designed to be used for 40 days minimum because it takes that much time to create new neural pathways in the brain. I’ve done many of these types of ancient meditations and always found they have the effects they say they are going to have. Using prana (life force) and sound currents, the brain is able to redirect the thought waves and create more positive thought patterns. Additionally, the breathing helps rebuild the wattage of the nervous system which is depleted when we have an emotionally depleting situation.
“As humans we feel the loss of loved ones and grieve. As yogis we know everybody as a loved one and part of the Creator. How can we grieve when a loved one goes home?” - Yogi Bhajan
Mantra For Healing
Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Se So Hung is an 8-syllable mantra that many yogis recite to heal themselves or others. The intention behind reciting it is to bring healing energy into the body from the Universe or to project it into someone else. It’s a calming and soothing sound that is most easily recited as a song. The recordings my friend Guru Jas on White Sun or Nirinjan Kaur are beautiful and you can listen to them or sing along with the simple sounds. It’s not about the words or their meaning, it’s about sound currents creating harmony in the vibrational field of the body in relation to the Universe.
Hold your hands up with your elbows at your sides with palms facing up and your fingers together. Your hands should point away from you at a diagonal. As you do this, sit cross-legged with a straight spine and imagine healing energy falling into your palms. Breathe deeply when you take your air in before saying/singing the mantra. Do this or at least listen to it for 40 days and see how it starts to shift the energy inside of you. The yogis say when you’re too broken to do yoga or breathwork, just hit play and the sound current will start to shift your energy. Do this mantra/meditation for 30 minutes daily with your eyes closed.
Meditation For Healing
Another really great mantra for healing your heart where the emotions of sadness get stuck is Sat Kartar. The yogis combine a simple rhythmic movement to help open up and stimulate energy to the heart chakra. Bring your palms together in front of your heart on ‘sat’ and on ‘kartar’ spread them out to the sides with a 90-degree bend in your wrists and fingers together. Continue this motion fluidly for 3-30 minutes. For pictures of this movement, click here.
The simple act of listening to these mantras while you’re sleeping on a low volume or listening to them at work or in the car can help you feel supported and comforted. The yogis are not ones to avoid emotions, they view emotions as energy that can be moved and released. You can also try getting a series of Reiki sessions to assist yourself in the process as well. Get extra nutrients and treat your body with TLC (drink plenty of water and get extra sleep if you feel the need). Don’t drink to soothe your nerves. Alcohol is a depressant and does not allow you to feel better or heal. Choose healing herbal teas that soothe your nerves such as Kava Kava, lavender, and peppermint.
It can also help you significantly to surround yourself with a group of people who has strong energy fields to uplift your energy. If you can get to a kundalini yoga class, you’ll see that the yogis who have a regular practice will have strong energy fields. The teachers will even let you just lay down during the class and receive the healing group energy. I’ve personally found that breathwork is one of the most powerful ways to shift my emotional state. I recommend 30 minutes of Breath of Fire each day during your healing process.
Yogis who have attuned their energy to higher realms of consciousness and professional mediums are sometimes able to contact our deceased loved ones once they’ve left their physical bodies. It can be greatly healing to make some contact through a healer because you can be at ease that they have only moved onto the next phase in their soul’s path.
