Glow, Girl! Confidence Building Skincare Routines

A proper personal skincare routine is essential for living your best wellness lifestyle. Yet, it’s confusing. Every skincare product claims to finally get you the complexion of your dreams.

But wait a minute - that expensive moisturizer works great for your best friend but is causing you to breakout. What gives? And should you exfoliate? How often? What is toner? Do you need it? How many steps should your skincare routine consist of? Do you need all the products from the same brand?

Surprisingly, you don’t need a complicated skincare routine to get your glow on. Here are the basics you can easily maneuver into your current wellness lifestyle (and no - it doesn’t take 16 or more steps to get there).

Find Out Your Skin Type

If you don’t know, find out. Skincare products are made for specific skin types - which could be why your best friend’s products don’t work well for you and your skin. Consider going to a professional, such as a dermatologist, and finding out exactly what skin type you have. And yes, it changes through the years.

Not into hitting up your dermatologist’s office? Luckily, online you can find plenty of ‘how to’s’ in determining your skin type. Do your best!

The Deal With Toners

Not everyone needs a toner (I don’t use them, but have plenty of friends that do). Essentially, toners remove oil from your skin. They reduce clogged pores and help get rid of any debris left after cleansing - think leftover makeup.

Often, you cleanse, tone, then moisturize. Yet, if you’re sure of your cleansing routine - toner might not be necessary. It’s often a personal preference and based off of your skin type. And you can get toner for specific skin types. Remember, your skincare routine doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be a simple 3-step process or less. Find what works best for you. It might take a few trial runs so get ready.

Apply Moisturizer Correctly

Moisturizer is probably the most important part of your skincare routine. It prevents deterioration of your skin - including aging, dryness, flakiness, and redness. Even if you have oily skin, you need it.

The problem arises when applying moisturizer and buying moisturizer. So here are a few tips.

  • Make sure to apply moisturizer right when you get out of the shower - especially during the winter months.
  • Rub your moisturizer in using a circular motion. It maximizes the effects of your moisturizer increasing circulation and reducing puffiness.
  • Apply moisturizer twice a day - once in the morning and once at night.
  • Get the right moisturizer for your skin type. Read the labels and make sure it all matches up!

Consider a Jade Face Roller

You can buy these handy gadgets on Amazon. Essentially, it gives your skin a nice massage. And it looks kind of like a mini paint roller.

How does it work? This gentle massage stimulates the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system drains toxins, excess fluid, and waste from the body. In turn, your skin appears less puffy, more radiant, and more clear!

The key is to use it on moisturized and clean skin. Don’t start rollin’ if your makeup is still on. You’ll only be clogging up your pores. Some experts even recommend keeping the tool in the fridge so that it is nice and cool when you go to use it.

Go Organic

Like food, natural skincare products are best - especially if you want to live your best wellness lifestyle. Chemicals are toxic and we need to stop putting them in our food and on our skin. Read the labels. Take care of yourself and your body with all-natural products.

Don’t Forget the SPF

Sunscreen it up! Consider the sun your skin’s worst enemy. Sunscreen doesn’t just prevent skin cancer, but also wrinkles, discolouration, blotchiness, and more. It’s non-negotiable. If there’s one thing you shouldn’t skip in your skincare routine, this is it.

Never Pick At Your Face

We’re told this from an early age - but a reminder never hurts. Quite picking or squeezing or touching your face. Your hands are full of germs and bacteria. Just keep ‘em away! Plus, if you pick at it, you are likely going to cause scarring or a scab that takes much longer to fade.

Take Those 5 Minutes & Take Your Makeup Off

We’ve all been guilty of this one. It’s late. You’re tired. You decide to just hit the hay instead of properly washing your face or even brushing your teeth (don’t lie).

Make this a rule: Never go to bed without washing your makeup off. It’s not worth it. And chances are you will direct yourself right toward a breakout if you don’t.

Drink Up!

We’re not talking about wine here. Get your fill of H2O. Aim for 8 glasses of water a day. It makes your body run smoothly and your skin shine!

Bonus: It can increase your alertness during that midday slump. Keep a bottle of water with you wherever you go.

Say No to Face Wipes

Remember our tip about going organic? That applies here too. Face wipes are loaded with chemicals like alcohol. And they are so so tempting. But truth be told: They wreak havoc on your skin. They dry it out. They don’t properly cleanse it. So, don’t buy them or use them.

Get Ready to Glow, Girl

Confidence comes from within. But it radiates that much better when your skin feels good and clear. Look good and feel good. Get your skincare routine down pat. Use our tips and your beauty is guaranteed to shine through.
