Feed Your Body Friday: Homemade Bulletproof Coffee

Wait - what is bulletproof coffee?

The bulletproof coffee trend started in 2014 as part of the Keto diet. The idea is simple: add a spoon of butter or coconut oil (or both) to your coffee, for this bulletproof coffee recipe we will use coconut oil. So while the caffeine is waking you up, the fat neutralizes the feeling of hunger and keeps you going all morning without snacking.

When you start your day with essential fats, you give your body a BOOST of energy, in addition to helping cognitive functioning and hormonal balance. When your hormones are in balance, suddenly you feel a lot more energy, you have less desire for sugar and junk food, your thoughts are clear, you feel better in general.

The coconut oil has many positive effects on the human body:

  • Increase in energy.
  • Increased rate of metabolism
  • Increased feeling of satiety
  • Helps in weight loss
  • Help the immune system

At first, the idea of having coconut oil in my coffee really didn’t make me want to drink it, but I was surprised to see that I actually really liked the taste. It was a bit like drinking a creamy latte with a light, milky coffee tastes with lots of foam and I now choose this as an alternative to milk and sugar in my coffee first thing in the morning.

Be careful though, now that you’re learning how to make bulletproof coffee at home, you need to be aware of how your body will react to new fats and oils (even though they are healthy). I recommend, when starting out, begin with a small amount of coconut oil and butter and build up as your body gets used to it.

Homemade Bulletproof Coffee Recipe

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • ½ to 1 tbsp. coconut oil (or MCT Oil)
  • 1 tbsp. grass-fed butter
  • ¾ cup dark Hot coffee

If you aren’t in it for the Ketogenesis, you can also add…

  • 1 tsp. honey
  • cinnamon powder
  • vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp. protein powder

Preparation

  1. Pour the brewed coffee into the blender (or milk frother)
  2. Add your coconut oil and butter. (If you are adding extra ingredients, you would also add them here.)
  3. Blend until the preparation has a beige color and a nice creamy foam on top.
  4. Pour and enjoy it!
